What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are biocompatible titanium fixtures placed inside the jaw bone. Each implant is held in place by a biological healing process know as osseo-integration, meaning that the implant acts as a stable permanent base for either a dental crown or bridge, hence mimicking a tooth root.

Implant placement may require some bone and soft tissue augmentation procedures, depending on the amount of previous bone loss (due to infection & the removal of a tooth). In general, the greater the tissue loss then the more complex the implant treatment process. This is why the specialist training & skills of a periodontist are highly beneficial in achieving ideal tooth replacements, even in apparently simple implant cases.

The restoration of dental implants ranges from a single tooth crown to full mouth reconstruction techniques.

The dental implant is the threaded part shown on the x-ray below. The white insides of both central incisor crowns are also seen on the image.

What are the options for missing teeth?

In the past, when people lost a tooth through dental decay or gum disease then it was typically replaced by either a denture (a removable plate with a plastic tooth) or a dental bridge (a false tooth attached to an adjacent real one).

Fortunately dental implants, when placed with sufficient care & expertise, provide a much more pleasing & permanent solution.

Implants are suitable for anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine tooth extraction, and with good oral hygiene.

If you’re very nervous or prefer to forget the dental experience, then a medical specialist in sedation can help you relax during the surgery.

Dental implants are the best long-term solution because they:

1. restore function so that you can speak and chew normally

2. spare other teeth from being used as bridge supports

3. preserve jaw bone, which would otherwise waste away

4. prevent other teeth from tilting or over-growing

5. are cleaned in a similar way to your natural teeth

6. have excellent success rates. Over 95% achieve biological integration within several months, then last in the long-term with good oral hygiene.

Examples of our Dental Implants

Dental implant: This patient had a congenitally missing upper incisor. His previous dentist had fitted a bridge which had come off 8 times, causing severe embarrassment & inconvenience.
These photos were taken immediately after implant insertion, then the crown fitting.
Dental implant: We use a 3D x-ray (CBCT) as the gold standard for 3D assessment of the bone quality & quantity, and subsequently optimum positioning of our dental implants (as shown here).
Gum tissue graft: This patient had suffered severe localised loss of gum tissue, and was suffering chronic tooth sensitivity. Treatment involved a gum tissue graft to reconstruct the lost tissue and cover the exposed tooth root surface.
Dental Implants: The central incisor tooth shown on the left side (covered by a crown) is no longer viable. It's also aesthetically handicapped by the the adjacent gum recession, which gives it the appearance of an elongated crown length. The failing incisor tooth has been replaced by a dental implant, with associated bone and soft tissue graft procedures. Hence the missing tooth, supporting bone and gum tissues have all been replaced for the optimal (natural looking) aesthetic and functional result.
